Cleopatra...

Just the name invokes rich imagery: gold adorned maidens, lavish clothing, glowing skin, decadence, sensuality, abundance and health. Cleopatra used Essential Oils on a daily basis. She would bathe in Rose Oil & milk, often several times a day, to keep her skin soft and smooth. Cleopatra reportedly requested her room be filled knee high with rose petals, and first made love to Mark Anthony on a bed also covered with fragrant rose petals, one inch deep.  She even used Essential Oils to perfume the grand purple sails of her royal barge, so that the luxurious smell would announce her presence long before she was even seen.

Many credit the Egyptians with the creation of Aromatherapy. Essential Oils in Cleopatra’s day were not seen as a luxury, but as a necessary part of a person’s daily routine. From the richest Queen, down to the lowliest labourer, Egyptians used Essential Oils to protect their skin from the drying effects of the unyielding sun; on their feet to prevent the skin from cracking, and to act as an antiseptic; to ease sore muscles after a long day of work; and of course as a simple perfume. The Egyptians used Essential Oils to make creams and emollients. They would often form them into cones, which were placed in their hair, so the cones would melt during the day and release pleasing, relaxing, or invigorating scents. The doctors of the day understood the healing effects of Essential Oils, and used them routinely in massage oils to help cure their patients’ ills. There is a report that around the twelfth century BC, construction workers working on a burial mound went on strike. Not due to a lack of food, or water, as you may initially think, but because of a lack of Oils. “We have no ointment”, was their complaint. Workers depended on Essential Oils not only to protect them from the sun, but to ease sore muscles after long days of cutting and hauling stone. The oils were essential for therapeutic and spiritual reasons, to heal the mind, body, and spirit.

Aromatherapy these days is used for the purpose of improving your health, mood, and cognitive function. Like other modern types of medicine, Aromatherapy does not just rely on ancient traditions; instead its efficacy is constantly tested, as more knowledge is discovered. The more we discover about the benefits of Aromatherapy, the more we realize that the Ancient Egyptians were much further advanced than we previously supposed.
